Community Impact Award: The Kansas City Free Eye Clinic

Nov 22, 2022 | Community, Core Bank, Kansas City

In the third quarter, Core Bank awarded The Kansas City Free Eye Clinic (KCFEC) with the Community Impact Award of $5,000. KCFEC has been providing the Kansas City community with no-cost eye care and prescription glasses since 2008. They serve children and adults with low-income and homeless people in the metro area with access to preventative eye exams and glasses ensuring that sight-robbing eye disease and blurry vision don’t prevent someone from taking advantage of every opportunity. Eye exams frequently aid in identifying other underlying medical problems like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, and cancer.

KCFEC’s Children’s Vision Program relieves the financial and physical barriers that too often prevent children from accessing eye care by devoting clinic days to appointments for children from area schools. In a recent program year, the Children’s Vision Program outfitted more than 80% of the 134 kids screened with eyeglasses and ensured that young patients received referrals for the treatment they needed for more serious vision problems.

Free eye care provided by KCFEC is a valuable community service for low-to-moderate- income individuals and families. KCFEC has a crucial role to play to ensure that we strengthen the safety net that keeps people employed (able to see in order to perform their job duties), fed (able to maintain employment, earn money, and put dinner on the table), and outfitted to thrive (physically comfortable and free from the financial burden of unexpected or unaffordable medical care)

KCFEC’s free eye care services fall within Core Bank’s Community and Economic

Development Impact Area. The Community Impact Award reflects a deeper commitment to improving economic prosperity, especially for under-resourced individuals, families, and small businesses. Core Bank is dedicated to building healthier, more resilient, better connected, and inclusive communities throughout our footprint. Applications for the 4th quarter Community Impact Award will be accepted through December 1st.
