Core Bank has proudly awarded Access Period a Community Impact Award of $5,000 to enhance its vital services. This funding will cover the cost of 300 three-month period kits, which will be distributed to Omaha families and individuals in need through community partners and Access Points—three in Omaha and seven across Greater Nebraska.
Access Period is a dedicated organization combatting period poverty in Nebraska. It provides free menstrual products to anyone in need while working to de-stigmatize menstruation through education and awareness. The organization collaborates with community partners,, schools (K-12 and colleges), and food pantries to ensure products reach those who need them most.
The Hidden Burden of Period Poverty
Period poverty affects 2 in 5 people who menstruate. The shame and stigma surrounding periods often make this issue invisible, forcing individuals to make difficult choices when they cannot afford essential menstrual products.
“Our mission is to meet this basic need, giving our neighbors what they deserve—more worry-free days,” said Kristin Lowrey, Founder and Executive Director of Access Period.
According to a 2024 survey by the Alliance for Period Supplies, 72% of respondents had to choose between buying diapers, formula, or food for their families and purchasing menstrual or postpartum products for themselves. While Nebraska recently eliminated the tax on period products, government assistance programs like SNAP and WIC still do not cover them.
A Growing Need
Access Period’s work is critical for underserved youth, families, and Omaha’s growing refugee and migrant populations, who benefit not only from free products but also from education materials. The organization distributed 8,747 packs (containing 809,083 products) in 2023, serving 11,031 individuals and providing 123,895 worry-free days. By August 2024, distribution had already increased significantly, and they delivered 1.5 million products in 2024. They are striving to distribute 2 million products in 2025.
“I have three foster daughters currently, and we’ve had several foster daughters in the past. We love Access Period—it’s so helpful. It saves us money and time, helping our family make ends meet,” shared a period kit recipient.
Partnerships Making a Difference
Access Period’s partnerships amplify its impact. “Access Period fills a critical need at YES by providing young women with free feminine hygiene products,” said Kalisha Reed, Executive Director of Youth Emergency Services. “This partnership allows us to focus our in-kind donation efforts on food, clothing, and other hygiene products. We are so grateful for their support.”
