Employee Spotlight: Sam Croux

By Sam Croux, Universal Banker, Core Bank
If you would have asked me ten years ago what I planned for myself career-wise, it wouldn’t have been anything in the banking world. I was about to graduate college with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts and I had a grand idea of working for an award winning design firm. Things don’t always go as planned, however. Right before I graduated, the economic crisis was in full bloom and I was laid off. I ended up moving back in with my parents to try and find my niche in the working world.
I was in and out of different jobs, never satisfied with any of them. I was so focused on trying to land a job that was in line with my degree that I started losing the passion and drive I had for it. The issue wasn’t that I couldn’t find a job, it was that I couldn’t find one I loved that I could really grow in.

Some may think I am crazy, but I knew that I had to make a career shift.

Aside from art, I didn’t feel like I had any special talents. I was having trouble figuring out what path to pursue.
An an interim solution, I decided to take a job as a teller for a large bank. I ended up enjoying it! After a few years, I realized I wanted to learn more about banking. I also wanted to find a smaller bank that was more in touch with the local community. I ended up getting a job with a small business bank, and learned so much. I made lasting connections with my coworkers. I valued the years with my previous bank… they taught me most of what I know. But towards the end, I knew it wasn’t a bank that I could grow my career in. It’s hard staying put when you know it will not lead you where you want to go.

Knowing when it’s your time to move on can be difficult but very rewarding.

Making the shift to Core bank was unnerving. The question, “Am I making the right move?” was playing on repeat in my head. Any kind of major change can be scary, whether it’s something in your personal life or something in your work life.
Taking a step back, I realized it was silly that I ever questioned this move! I knew the people I was joining; they’re fun, passionate and driven. They were everything I was looking for. Core Bank is much more than a bank, it’s a family. Even though my family is small, we’re built to help each other grow and succeed. I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together in the months and years to come.
