Liliana Marquez: National Hispanic Heritage Month

Sep 18, 2024 | Core Bank, Employee Spotlight

From September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month. This observance began as a way to promote the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic-Americans – specifically those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Hispanic Heritage Month originally started with one week of commemoration when it was first introduced by Congressman George E. Brown in June 1968. With the civil rights movement, the need to recognize the contributions of the Latin community gained traction in the 1960s. Awareness of the multicultural groups living in the United States was also gradually growing.

We are pleased to spotlight Liliana Marquez, Core Bank Mortgage Loan Originator, to share her culture and personal story as her country of origin is Mexico.

What does Hispanic heritage mean to you and why is it important to celebrate?

For me Hispanic heritage is part of who I am. Is celebrating my culture and traditions that I grew up with and my daily habits. I cook Mexican food every day at home and just knowing this month we all as community gather together to celebrate makes me feel proud of being a Latina.

Reflect on your traditions, culture, and values growing up.

I grew up in Mexico, so my traditions are very strong, I love traditional Mexican food, September 15th was my favorite day of the year growing up.

What role has your heritage played in shaping your identity, values, and beliefs? I can proudly say that due to my traditions I am who I am, my parents always taught us to work hard since I was very little, we always had responsibilities and duties to complete. My culture has taught me to respect others and help my community.

Professional/personal background and how your heritage influences you in life: My parents always told me to work hard for what I want, and I had to do many things growing up to get to where I am now. I had three jobs at the same time I was going to college to be able to afford it, but it was worth it!  I would not be as successful if it wasn’t because of my community. When my clients see my values and that I am here to support them they support me back by referring to their friends and family.

Fun fact or childhood memory related to your Hispanic heritage: I grow up in Mexico until I was 15 years old when I was on elementary and middle school my favorite day of the year was September 15th our Independence Day because we will prepare a dance, we will buy traditional dresses and the whole town will get together to celebrate!
