National Retro Day: A Throwback to Banking’s Good Old Days

Feb 27, 2025 | Core Bank, Personal

Today’s National Retro Day is the perfect occasion to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and reflect on how banking has evolved over the decades. From the days of handwritten ledgers and air tubes to today’s digital convenience, the financial world has come a long way.

The Banking Experience: Then vs. Now

🔹 Face-to-Face Banking: In the past, customers visited their local-bank branch regularly, greeted by familiar tellers who knew them by name. Transactions were conducted in person. While we still have that same in-person customer service, now you can deposit a check remotely and transfer money on Core Bank’s mobile app.

🔹 Passbooks & Paper Statements: Before online banking, customers carried passbooks to record every deposit and withdrawal. Bankers manually updated these records, providing a tangible history of financial activity.

🔹 Mortgage Lending in the Old Days: A mortgage application once meant stacks of paper, lengthy approval times, and in-person meetings with a loan officer who assessed everything by hand. Today, the process is streamlined with online applications, digital document submissions, and quicker approvals.

🔹 Retro Banking Tech: Remember the clunky adding machines, rotary phones, and typewriters used to process transactions? Even ATMs, once a novelty in the ‘70s, revolutionized banking by allowing 24/7 cash withdrawals. Now we have ITMs that bridge the gap between online banking and visiting a branch.

Bringing Retro Vibes to Banking Today

While technology has transformed banking, some old-school principles remain timeless—personalized service, trust, and community relationships.
